At first the Dutch death metal band Scrotum could seem like a spoof band because of the inane samples, titles and artwork, but beneath all the fun there's actually some competent death metal to explore. The music is old school death metal with a good dosage of inspiration from Cannibal Corpse and Deicide. The songs are mostly fast, but not to a degree where things are exaggerated.
There's a good deal of groove mixed in as well and that works like it's supposed to. The music is overall both brutal and diverse. Actually it reminds me a little of other Dutch bands like Houwitser and Sinister in terms of style. The sound is fat and compact, but it doesn't seem like anything vanish in the soundscape. I like the thick production as it captures how death metal is supposed to sound - tight, brutal and in your face.
There's nothing different in what Scrotum shows on Osculum Scrotum, but that doesn't make it less good. It's apparent that they do it for the fun and I value that. If you're into brutal death metal done the old school way and don't mind some Dutch humour as well, then this is definitely worth a closer look.
