I really like brutal death metal in the vein of Suffocation and old Cannibal Corpse and Scottish death metallers Sons Of Slaughter play that brand of brutal death. Though the similarities are many the band doesn't sound exactly like a clone. It doesn't start out that convincing with the rather standard-like "Lead Us Not", but things get a lot better along the way. There's really nothing new at all here, but the songs are skilfully written and that is what counts in the end. The music is diverse and of course stuffed with the grooves and blastbeats that I love from Suffocation's music, but the band doesn't just rely on pure brutality. They also put a bit of melody in here and there. Mainly the fact that they've got solos in most of the songs is a huge asset which certainly prolongs the durability of the songs.
A thing that I find a bit negative is the sound. I wish the production would have been a little better as it doesn't sound that thick and full. Especially the drums sound flat and weak. It would have been interesting to hear how it would have sounded with a more powerful sound. The thing with the production doesn't spoil the overall experience though. Most of the songs are good, but I found in particular the title track, "Unmarked Grave", "Mechanically Maintained" and "Bloodblind" to be worthwhile. If you like your death metal to be in the vein of Suffocation, Cryptopsy or Dying Fetus then it would be a mistake not to look any further into the music of Sons Of Slaughter as they rely heavily on the essentials from those.
