SORTILEGIUM - Unholy Land
GENRE: Death/doom metal COUNTRY: Italy FORMAT: CD LABEL: Self financed YEAR: 2010 RATING: 5/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Sortilegium Tregor Malphas Russo is a busy man. He's been playing many different styles and in many different bands, but it seems he always return to his doomy death metal project Sortilegium. The music on Unholy Land is as I already wrote a mixture of doom and death metal. The focus is on slow and heavy riffs. Diversity is not a big turning point here and often it feels like Tregor repeat some of the riffs a bit too much. No doubt that the man has some good ideas, but playing the same riffs over and over, like on the titletrack sort of water things out and makes it boring. However I like that he often use keyboard parts to add some additional feeling to the songs. It works well, but as with most of the music these aren't all that varied either, but it doesn't affect the songs in a bad way. There's also a lot of acoustic guitar on the track "Descending of Souls". That does add some needed contrast, but overall it doesn't change much. The vocals are typical death metal growls. These don't really add or withdraw anything. Unholy Land is not a bad demo. It's obvious that Tregor has some good ideas and a lot of the riffs and parts are interesting, but I miss some more diversity in the music. |
