The 2003 debut Cabinet was a very strong effort who impressed a lot of people including myself. That fact of course didn't lower my expectations towards their sophomore release and Noctambulant fulfil those expectations to the utmost. The band more or less continues from where Cabinet left of, but the music appears to have gotten a tad more on the technical side. The music is complex and very technical death metal, but still it has an accessibility and catchiness that just makes it go straight in.

I keep hearing similarities with Necrophagist and Atheist style-wise and to a small degree also a few places in the music, but Spawn Of Possession have a sound and style they rightfully can call their own. The band clearly have evolved and tried out a few different things on Noctambulant and with success. Noctambulant is an even more diverse effort than Cabinet was and that says a lot. The songs are packed with details and new seem to pop up with each listen. It's also a relief that the band haven't cut back on the leads. On the contrary there seem to be even more than before and these add immensely to the feel of the songs. The band is clearly in complete control of what they are doing, never do they seem to loose the overview nor the focus. Everything is thoroughly structured and nothing is left to circumstances. There are really no specific highlights on Noctambulant as each song in itself is a highlight.

Noctambulant is technical death metal of the highest calibre. It doesn't come much better than this and that fact become clearer and clearer with each listen. If you like your death metal technical and complex then Noctambulant is impossible to avoid.
