SUPPOSITORY

Holland seems to always have had a vibrant and healthy extreme metal scene with lots of bands to keep it alive. One of these bands is grindcore crazyheads Suppository. The band has several split releases and a full-length release in their luggage. The most recent release is a split with Cliteater which was put out via No Escape some months ago. I caught up with bassist Max to hear about the replacement for the former vocalist Boris, the split CD with Cliteater and of course what next the band has in store.

You recently put out a split CD with Cliteater. How has the reactions been so far?
So far all reactions have been very good for both bands!

Is the material on the split a guideline to how the next material will sound?
Well we don't know. We never talk about how songs should sound when we are writing new ones. They just come up and if we like them we keep them. Of course there's always in some kind of way been a process, but never something like a guideline to how the songs should sound. And for the new songs we wrote the last months it seems that it will be a bit more old school than the release we did with Cliteater.

Who came up with the idea of you doing a split CD with Cliteater?
Both bands did. We've done a bunch of shows together through the years and it's always fun to hang out with the Cliteater guys. In a drinking bench after a gig it just came up and we all liked the idea. So doing a split together is a great way to show the friendship that we have with each other I think.

How did you end up getting the CD released through No Escape?
Maurice from Cliteater told me that No Escape was interested in releasing the split. Since we all like the most of their releases and they have a good distribution worldwide it was okay with us.

Do you plan to put it out on vinyl as well?
Well, we never talked about this, but I like the idea. It would be cool if No Escape or some other label would put this out on vinyl.

A thing I noticed is that you use a lot of samples. Are they an inseparable part of the music or could you see you not using them?
Samples are cool. Sometimes it adds something extra to a song or perhaps just makes it funny. We could probably avoid using them, but we all love samples and quotes so why not use them?

Humour appears to be a big part of your music judging from the samples you use. Do you take everything in a relaxed manner and just do it for the fun of it?
We are not a band with a message. It's more like a bunch of maniacs together making music, drink beer, smoke something and talk bullshit about everything. It has to be entertaining and relaxing for us. We are all working class motherfuckers and this is the best way to get your mind off other things, get rid of your aggression and frustrations and set your mind off things. If I couldn't do this I would be a very annoying person to other people.

The samples are they from movies and stuff? One of them sounds like it's been taken from a beer commercial!
Yes the one you mention is an old commercial called "Ode to Beer". I found this one on the internet on a site with old commercials and jingles. And the guy is right! Listen to it. It's an intro with a message [laughs]. The other ones are taken from movies.

Do you just like Cliteater record and mix everything yourselves or do you have a producer/engineer helping out?
Like always we went into a studio to record and produce the whole thing with a little help. For the first time we went to a local studio, but during the recording process we were not happy with the guy recording it [we are still not]. He turned out to be very arrogant and didn't listen to us when we told him how we wanted the whole thing to sound. In the end everything turned out good, but things could have been much better and faster. On the next release we will do everything ourselves. Roel got his own home studio and a large fridge so we will give it a try.

Musically which bands have had a huge impact on you? Napalm Death seems to be one!
There are a lot of bands! To name a few let's say Napalm Death, Brutal Truth , Bolt Thrower ,Repulsion , Terrorizer , O.L.D. ,Disrupt , Extreme Noise Terror as you can hear it's more the older stuff. This is probably because we are also becoming some old bastards, but for me these bands have something special. The insensitivity without the high tech studio stuff to spoil it. It's just great riffs and songs that gives you goosebumps even if you hear them for the thousand time.

Which albums do you think is essential in any goregrind or grindcore collection?
Oh man I could go on for hours mentioning good bands there's too much good stuff, but here's a couple: Terrorizer World Downfall, anything by Bolt Thrower, Disrupt Unrest, Discharge Why, anything of the old shit by Napalm Death, Macabre Sinister Slaughter, Naked City Torture Garden, anything by Nasumand Brutal Truth Sounds of the Animal Kingdom.

You're featured on the Giants of Grind DVD recently released by Power It Up. Do you have plans about doing more of this stuff at some point?
The Giants of Grind DVD was something that came along with the festival. I have to say this DVD is great! The quality and sound is way better than other DVD compilations I seen. I think that we will do something in the future if we get some cool recordings or someone to produce some crazy stuff for us.

You've release quite a lot of split CD's during the years. Is there a particular reason why you stick to those instead of putting out "real" albums instead?
We like doing split release, especially with bands that we know personally. All the bands we've done a split release with we have a good friendship with in some kind of way. We know it's better to do another full-length album, but almost each time we have some songs finished we decide to use them for a split release instead.

Do you have any new releases in the works?
We have some new things coming up and guess what it's another split [laughs]. It will be a split live picture EP with Jigsaw Terror from Sweden. We also have some songs left from the last recordings with Boris that were supposed to be used for a split with F.U.B.A.R., but since luc, the vocalist in F.U.B.A.R. is also doing the vocals for us now we decided not to do this one. We haven't decided what to do with these recordings, but I'm sure we will find something for this. Right now we are writing a lot of new songs that we want to use for another full-length CD for next year.

Have you found a replacement for vocalist Boris who recently left the band?

Yes, we've found Luc who's also doing the vocals in F.U.B.A.R.. When Boris decided to put all his energy into Leng Tch'e he was the first person that came to mind who we would ask. He's the right guy. Very cool and active in the scene and he's starting to become a good beer drinker too [laughs].

How does the remainder of the year look for Suppository?
Mostly work on new songs and we have a few gigs coming up as well.

Anything you wish to add to conclude this interview?
Thanks a lot for your interest. Keep up the good work with the magazine. And for the people who are interested, come to our shows and drink with us. Check www.suppository.nl and www.myspace.com/suppositorybastards.
