The Sick, The Dead, The Rotten Part II is a three way split CD with Mumakil, Obtuse and Third Degree. All three bands manoeuvre within the regions of death metal and grindcore. Mumakil is probably the band that is closet to straight forward death metal, but the Swiss' mix in a bit of grind as well. The music is brutal and compact, but the band is not really able to do anything that makes them any different from so much else, but nevertheless Mumakil delivers nine songs that are quite convincing. The thick and meaty sound sure doesn't make things less good.
Holland's Obtuse play some pretty standard sounding grindcore mixed with chunks of punk and hardcore. The music is diverse, but without ever getting very interesting. A part of the explanation for this could be the light and dry sound which is typical for a grindcore band. It makes the music appear without much punch. Like many others Obtuse use humour in the music and it work very well. No doubt that the Dutchmen try to do their own thing, but somehow most of it ends up getting rather standard sounding.
The same could be said about Third Degree. I liked their 2005 effort Outstay as it had an outspoken Napalm Death and Extreme Noise Terror kind of feel to it, but the four songs on this split is somewhat different. Nowadays the music has a more noise kind of vibe to it. An approach which is not too far away from how Antigama and Drugs Of Faith sounds. To tell the truth it gets a little tiring after the first two songs so Third Degree is not contributing positively to the grading.
If you're a fan of any of the three bands then The Sick, The Dead, The Rotten Part II is difficult to avoid. It's also a fine way to get acquaintance with the bands if you don't already know their music, but as a whole the musical doings is not much above the mediocre.
