Long running Swedish death metallers Vomitory is back with their new album Primal Massacre. I'm not that familiar with any of their previous material besides having heard a few songs but judging from those I've heard I'd say it's a straight continuation of 2002's Blood Rapture which in other words mean straight ahead old school death metal.

There's absolutely nothing revolutionary about Primal Massacre but Vomitory plays their old school death metal in such a convincing way that you're able to abstract from the lack of innovation. There's a few places on Primal Massacre where there seems to be a strong reference to death metal veterans Bolt Thrower but this shouldn't be interpretated as an negative thing 'cause it fits in well. It's a little difficult for me to point out any favourite tracks but songs like "Demon's Divine" and "Autopsy Extravaganza" are two of the highlights. But this doesn't really mean that any of the other songs are bad, they just seem a little anonymous and perhaps even a little alike. Still Primal Massacre lies slightly above the average death metal album.

Primal Massacre doesn't have a whole lot to offer besides being a good, no frills old school death metal album that ought to satisfy the hungering death metal fan. If you're looking for something new and fresh then this is definitely not the place to look. But if you just like I prefer old school then you should consider checking out Primal Massacre
