WAKE - Leeches

YEAR: 2011

RATING: 7/10
REVIEWED BY: PSL

Leeches is the debut full-length by the Canadian grind band Wake. The music is a mix of grindcore, punk and crust, just as it was on the EP Surrounded by Human Filth. The song-writing is diverse and there are many fat and catchy riffs and part. The band is able to mix the fast with the slow and vice versa.

There's a bit of melody on "Dire" and "Plague of the Roach" and that of course spice it all up a little. In a way the music makes me think a bit of Drugs Of Faith and Weekend Nachos. The music has a lot of the same kind of feel. The faster and more anarchistic sort of brutality is expressed on "Means to An End" and "Recycle the Sickness". Overall the Canadians are very good at making the music diverse, intense and give it nerve.

The vocals are of course the shouting type of grindcore vocal. It works just right and fits the music well. The production is fat and meaty and the overall sound is dirty.

Leeches is a solid effort that gets straight to the point. There's no unnecessarily filler. If you like grindcore mixed with punk and crust then you can't go wrong with Leeches.
